In contrast, I have been reading recently about the type of democracy that flurished in between-war Europe, one critique of which is that proportionate representation led to a lack of mandate and direction. The implication being the democracy is more stable in a winner-take-all system like ours in that the system itself creates the consensus that allows action.
Proportional representation sucks. Israel had to adjust their system because it got so bad. These fruit loops from fringe partys get in, and then they become swing votes and get power way out of proportion to their size. That is why religious partys in Israel hold so much party eventhough they represent a small part of the population.

A winner take all, two party system is the only way to go. Any other system creates to much instability and give to much power to the fringe groups.

Of all the countries I have lived in I prefer our system.
