This is very sad because throughout the movie you know that it doesn't get made and you cannot help but think how spectacular a film it would have been.

Tying two threads together. If you wanted Dogma to be good, but you didn't like it, pick up a copy of
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. It's another quasi religious end of the world gone wrong story, but much, much better in every possible way. Terry Gilliam has been listed as the director in the inevitable screen version of the book.
