I first heard about this in the nineties and people at the Sierra Club were extrapolating all sorts of calamities that would be caused by whatever was happeing. Men were soon going to go sterile, the insect population was to run amuck, etc. etc. Did I miss the huge catastrophe?
We have been trying to stop Doolittle from pushing through a Dam and other water project in California that will be very bad for the California's ecosystem (Pombo was also behing the project but now he is not a factor). Everytime there is a hearing, our sides credibility always gets destroyed because some idiot environmentalist starts going on about how these things are going to cause terrible biblical disasters.
There is some weird psychosis in the environmental community that the world is about to go through some huge calamity because of what homo sapiens are doing. All they do is convince middle of the road people, that all envronmental proposals are overeactions to minor problems. If the world does not signicantly warm up in the next twenty years, the entire environmental movement is going to get a huge black eye, and consequently it will be extremely difficult to get even a reasonable environmental regulation passed.
If past experience is anything to go on, there won't be any significant statistical rise in tempature, and in fact I won't be surprised if the world gets cooler.
