DirecTV only currently needs two cables if you're running two receivers at the location, including the two receivers in a single DirecTV/DVR receiver.
IIRC, DirecTV is currently working on some sort of frequency modulation to let you accomplish the same thing with only one cable, so customers don't have to add an additional cable.
FWIW, though, I recommend that if you're running one cable, you go ahead and run two. Won't cost much more, and gives you the option of running a DVR with both tuners -- and once you get used to that on one TV, you'll be annoyed at every place in your house that doesn't have the DVR setup.
