I know quite a few people who've built straw and tire houses, and I'd consider using straw and adobe if I were to build a house, except for the fact that the humidity here would cause mold problems with the straw.

These days, there are some really good products out there that are environmentally sound for building. Bamboo is a wonderful wood to use in homes. It is very hard, it grows quickly, and it's readily renewable. Cork is also great because they don't kill the trees to harvest it. Very renewable.

There's a great place in Austin called Eco-Wise (http://www.ecowise.com), that specializes in eco friendly building for interiors.
