Somebody died, and has stupid, greedy heirs. I worked retail when I was in college, and at least once a week, someone would try to return cosmetics, pantyhose (with packaging showing groovy girls in miniskirts), or 10 seasons old clothing that they had cleaned out of dead grandma's closet. When I would explain that the item in question had not been sold by the store for many, many years, some would act ashamed, but many just got testy and demanded a refund anyway
