What you're suggesting is perfectly valid on a "want to get together again for dinner next week?" level. However, what Obama was saying was that we can't just say "well, these people aren't "real" Americans, so we can ignore them" on a macro level.

We all share a country. That means that we need to find ways to function together and find some common ground.
