It's just a bowl of heavy, fatty cheese. Of course that tastes good, but it's not rave worthy. Not in my book. And that's why I have never and will never compliment the woman on those potatos. It's not deserved.

When she makes a good tenderloin, I give her props.

Sebby, if you sit seething because someone complimented your mother on her mashed potatoes, you seriously need to unwind or your head is going to pop off your neck someday.
Here's a clue: sometimes people give effusive compliments to a cook for making something tasty for the simple reason that the cook spent time and energy making the tasty dish for them. It is as much an acknowledgment of the effort as the result. Anytime someone** makes you a meal, you should find something to compliment. They deserve it even if it isn't the best thing you've ever eaten because they made it for you.
And a rave on the mashed potatoes simply means they like the taste of them, even if they are just a bowl of heavy fatty cheese. Why that should make you seethe is beyond comprehension. My SIL makes a cheesy pineapple side dish that I don't particularly like but several in the family enjoy. It doesn't bother me at all when they compliment her on those. I just compliment her on something I do find tasty.
Sebby. You. Need. To. Lighten. Up. Seriously.
**Non-restaurant. You can save compliments to a restaurant chef for truly amazing food.
