Wondering what the original point of a cummerbund was, I looked on Wikipedia and discovered that the original function was two-fold, apparently: A place to stash your theatre tickets and such and a way to hide your gut after you pigged out at the banquet. If you don't need it for either of these purposes, perhaps there is no scandal in not wearing one.
