 I think it's lovely.
I also applaud you for ditching a traditional centerpiece.  It's so irritating to be seated at a table where you can only engage the people on your side because of the ridiculousness blocking your view from the other half of the table and the rest of the room.
I was at a gala last month that had a 5 foot centerpiece on each table.  While they raised a lot of money, I imagine they would have done much better during the auction if people could have seen what was happening.
