Any tiger that's been in captivity for that long isn't about to be put out in the wild and actually be able to survive. It's zoo/captivity or death.
As for the mic, my understanding was he hit him after the tiger had already started to paw him. With training, that's supposed to mean "bad kitty." Like hitting a dog with a rolled up newspaper or spraying a cat with water after it craps on the rug. Here, though, the tiger's response was, okay, time for dinner.
