 I was on a train that crashed. A hundred people with broken bones etc. The engineers both died, and supposedly one of them made a heroic act that saved passengers right at the end. My family walked off with no problem, except my wife has emotional issues WRT public transit now. Of course, she married me so lord knows how stable she was to begin with.
We got notice there will be a class action. I told myself if we get a check I would send it to the widow of one of the engineers. I told myself it would be bad karma to take money for a crash we all walked away from.
5 years later, when we got the checks, I cashed them. 
Class actions have a momentum that doesn't really require everyone to emotionally join in.
