It's like the government telling people they can't drink until they're 21 or smoke until they're 18. As soon as a presumed higher authority says you can't do something that you should be able to do since it doesn't really hurt anyone else, it suddenly attracts all kinds of special attention and becomes the cool thing to do.
In this case, deleting posts about Carr & Ferrell on the Big Board (telling the community they can't read the posts) creates a much bigger stir and garners far more attention than the original posts themselves. Now everyone will assume that they should avoid working for C&F like the plague--what else is there to assume other than that the content of the deleted posts was scathing?
C&F would have been better off having two or three people create Hotmail accounts and then having them go to the boards to provide contrary opinions (that seem reasonable, make some concessions, and aren't completely overblown) under the guise of being objective outsiders. I'm surprised that they didn't have the good sense to realize how anonymous Internet posting and the influencing of opinion on the the Internet really works. Too late now.
