And, in person, Carrey is supposed to be a real dick, which should be another requisite for winning the role.

Darrin Stevens is the linchpin of this stroy. You need a solid solid performance. Certainly not Will Farrell, Carrey would be better sure, but he's not right either.
Darrin must pull off this tortured inner turmoil. Here's a guy who married a witch, and spends most of his time railing against witchcraft, or fighting minor setbacks in his professional life. Why would he marry Sam if he hates witchcraft? Of course, there is the implication of some sexual use of the witchcraft, but that is unstated, and a card not played.
Why would Darrin fight his petty advertising battles, when Sam could make him weathly beyond his dreams, or at least set him up in his own shop, free of the shackles of Larry Tate?
What of the inevitable aging differences? Sam will live for hundreds of years, as will Tabitha. There needs to be some sadness in Darrin's every breath because of this; subtle sure- this is not a tragedy, but it must be there just the same. In short, Darrin is a twisted, tortured unhappy man, who must be played tightly.
No, I'm sorry Jim Carrey is not right for this role. For a movie this important i would hope Hollywood could put boxoffice aside, and make the choice history demands:
Crispin Glover was born to play Darrin Stevens.
