There are some acrylics I love seeing - a lot of the op art stuff. It makes good large solid spaces, sharp edges, that sort of thing. But it's not what I do when I'm mucking around on canvas, because I like mixing it up and creating funky goo and running things together. It's also easier to fix mistakes with oil. (Note - I do this for fun and to teach kids, wouldn't let anyone here see my muck).

Oils are much, much harder to clean, though there is something somewhat new called water-based oil (yes, contradiction in terms) that is easier to clean. It's what they're using for my daughter's art lessons, and it behaves sort of like an intermediate between acrylics and oil.

Another good gift - lessons. A lot of museums have great programs.
