 I don't think there was ever a point in my life at which I could do more than 4-5 pullups, including when I used to spend rather a lot of time in the weight room.
As for your implication that men feel the same pressures (and thus buy crappy fitness products), I'm not sure that is right.  Men may want to improve their self esteem by improving their fitness or appearance, but I don't think men are socialed in the same way to define themselves as much by their appearance.
And yes, I recognize the silliness of discussing this at such a broad level of generality.
