I would think not for the structural integrity. Traditional box springs -- which I haven't used in 15 years or more, so I could be wrong -- have planks, right, rather than being a flat surface? The point is you need a flat surface for the mattress to rest upon.

Yes, I prefer a firm mattress. I had a pillow-top, but it was firm. The fabric is not too warm. That was more of an old-school problem, and they have re-engineered the tops and the fabrics to keep them cool and help with airflow. I live in Texas and I am perfectly comfortable.
