 You sounds like a crazy person to me, but whatever.
Two additional thoughts.  First, (which is perhaps obvious), but your friend should avoiding eating out or ordering in.  It is much easier to control what (and how much) you eat if you cook it yourself, and easier to avoid unhealthy choices if you were disciplined while at the grocery store, which is easier than being disciplined while looking at a menu.
Second, he shouldn't be thinking about it as dieting or losing weight.  His goal should be to be healthy, by eating healthy and getting enough exercise, which should lead to the weight loss automatically.  Your experience, as someone who seems never to have had a health need to lose weight, isn't really relevant at all.
