In general, there is this weird conceit that automobile collisions (with other cars, stationary objects, pedestrians, bicycles) are called "accidents," whether or not the driver invited the risk by speeding, texting, drinking and driving, etc. News stories always say that the vehicle hit x, not that the driver drove into x.

eta: This is said better in a book that ncs is reading.
