beijing residents at first were pretty pleased because the subway system was finally expanded to get ready for the games- then they got unhappy when the neighborhoods started to be torn down, or at least hidden- then a few million people were ordered to leave the city.

I was thinking of LA and Atlanta, where I am given to understand it has occurred. It sounds like you're saying it happens outside the US as well, at least in Beijing?
