But I don't think cheapness is the reason because my sister buys candy to give to the neighborhood kids and the girls have mermaid and princess costumes. I think it's just one of his weird quirks.
**My nephew (not the son of this BIL) is stupid cheap. And he doesn't seem to learn when it is stupid to be cheap. He decided he "couldn't afford" insurance on his car. So when he hit a deer on the road, he had to pay for the considerable expenses out of pocket. His most recent stupid cheapness is deciding it was "too expensive" to pay to plug in the refrigerator when he spends so much time at work. So he can't keep any perishable food and has to eat out all the time.

As they said on that old Honda commercial, you can't make this stuff up. My brother has a great story about a stupid/cheap teenager he knew who who never ran the heat in his car because he didn't want to use extra fuel.
