Maybe I'm making a bad assumption, but given your general circle of friends, is this not just a guy but a
rich guy who is not married to his abuser and until just now doesn't have any kids with her?
My general lack of sympathy is not because he's a guy but because he had and has the resources to get out of the relationship and no children to bind him to her.
Right now I have truckloads of sympathy for the baby if she doesn't stop drinking and drugging. If he's one of your rich friends, I hope he promises her whatever it takes -- up to and including paying her -- to lay off alcohol and drugs until after the baby is born. I've seen babies bounce back from chronic
in utero cocaine dosing** but fetal alcohol syndrome is a lifelong issue.
**With lots of medical and special education intervention they caught up to normal within a couple years but doctors don't make long-term promises.
