Burnham and his partner, John Root were VERY bigshot architects, having given birth to the modern skyscraper. Burnham was also the designer of the Columbian Exposition of 1893, which is written about quite brilliantly in "Devil in the White City." In addition to designing the Hotel Burnham and the Rookery, another famous Chicago architectural highlight, Burnham designed Washington, DC's Union Station and numerous other national highlights.
He is part of the pantheon, along with Louis Sullivan, Adler, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
