I'm not sure I totally understand your question, but I think they are just saying that in TIST, American actors were parodying a British Pop/Psychedelic/Metal Band(s) and all of the cliches of rock-stardom generally.

I've never seen the show, but I'm beginning to appreciate why it has struck a chord with so many FB'ers who have seen it. It's summed up in this quote:

" As I say, their worst crime is that they might be wasting their lives because they haven't admitted to themselves they're not happy."
