I expect the product you get in coastal Texas in April is vastly different but the non-local stuff doesn't look to be better quality and is certainly not fresher than the local grocery chains.
On the other hand, I love buying from the growers at the farmers market when the seasonal stuff comes in. Super fresh, typically good quality. I just don't buy bananas, grapes and mangoes from them.

I'm pretty sure year-round availability to bountiful organic and non-organic fruits and veggies is part of the California Constitution. I think it's after the section where you also promise 45% of gross income to paying property taxes.
