Wow. Great post. Las Vegas, NM is a place very few people have been, and more people should go.

While in NM, one should stop at a Lotta Burger (they are all over the state- just sometime when nothing else looks good). Get the green chile burger. Ummmmm.

I wonder though if a better route isn't further South. Anyone who thinks Texas has speed traps hasn't spent enough time in Oklahoma. It might be worth considering keeping south through Missouri, into Arkansas, then crossing into Texas at Texarkana, taking I-20 to Dallas, I-35 down to Austin to visit all the board members there, drop down to Fredricksberg (and Luckenbach!) before heading west into the desert. When in Austin check out Antone's - it's not nearly as cool as it used to be when it could still catch fire and burn to the ground at any moment, but it's still a great place for good music. There's a cut up north from I-10 that is cross country (but fast) that goes through Iraan, then Midland, then up to Hobbs, NM. Keep following the mountains up north, and eventually you get back to the I-40 route, but by way of Roswell.

Alternatively, keep on the southern route and zip through western Texas on I-10, turning into I-20, stopping in the Guadalupe Mountians for some RnR. Marfa has a very funky art community, the the southernmost part of the Rockies is very different. At El Paso you can swing across the border to Juarez. It's no Tijuana, but it does have cheap everything.

Closer to home, taking I-68 west through Maryland is almost always an easier drive than the PA turnpike, unless there is likely to be snow. It's also more scenic.

But remember, if you go through OK, go slow, despite all desire to get through it as quickly as possible.
