I've always considered masques to be a rather sophisticated form of adult entertainment, really - so I think the resurgence of adult costumes at Halloween isn't about acting like children but rediscovering adult diversions and using the existing holiday as an excuse. (I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Carnival is increasing in popularity among adults where it is celebrated, too.) The whole "ooh, look, we're so young at heart" schtick is such a boomer thing, and the media persists in thinking old boomer attitudes bleed down onto the rest of us, but I don't think it's really accurate with respect to the under-35-40 crowd.

Yeah, that part of it was weird. I've always loved Halloween and dressing up. Some of my friends - not so much. Some people actually hate Halloween. I don't get it.
I don't think it's the letting go of the childhood so much as the escapism from everyday life. I mean really, how often do you get to dress up like Gene Simmons?
