I think purple was most expensive, but that any color at all was expensive, including black, so color in general would be a sign of wealth.
There were a number of places where sumptuary laws limiting, for example, the wearing of colors, became very extensive, and those are the places where colors were most prestigious. But that tends to be later in the middle ages in places like Northern Italy, rather than in the wild and crazy days of Goths and Huns.
