I think maybe RP was referring to the use of "who" instead of "that" when referring to "the group" as opposed to the collective noun treated as singular. You are correct that the British do that collective noun-plural thingy.
(e.g. "My family live there." As uttered by Sebastian Flyte, referring to the monstrosity of a "home" in Brideshead Revisited -- I don't know why, but that sentence sticks with me for some reason -- I didn't even need to google it.)
