I agree that Bowie was "a step above" Prince. This is mostly subjective, but I think he had a longer and more varied career. Not sure if he had more "hits" or gold/platinum albums or whatever. But he was already a star when Prince was in junior high.
That said, to Hank's question -- Bowie was older, had lived dangerously, was known to be in not-great health. Prince was, well, not much older than many of us. Bigger shock.
