It depends upon the state. For example, some states have limits on how large a chunk of the paycheck can be garnished. Others exempt a "head of household" from having *wages* (sometimes including 1099 income as wages, other times 1099 income is not considered a wage) garnished.
The amount permitted by the state to be garnished is then usually deducted from the judgment debtor's paycheck and sent to the judgment creditor.
