A gift is a gift. You have no obligation to puchase some tchotchke from a store.

I often give things to people for whom they are better suited. Those handmade soaps from France my mother sent me were the loveliest gift for my aunt and my mother in law who adore such things.

I have a closet full of chinese tea sets, champagne flutes, etc. that my mother continues to buy and send though I have service for 24 for champagne and 8 for chinese tea. All of these lovely things have found wonderful uses in other people's houses.

And, anyone who would check which year an ornament was produced should not be your friend.
