I don't know much about what he thinks, but I am pretty sure he identifies as a conservative. What I've been trying to do is describe how people who self-identify as conservatives think, because that essentially is what conservatism is.
I understand that that's frustrating to people like you who have strong views, self-identify as conservative, and think that other people who don't significantly share your views are not really conservative. Your views may make more sense and be more principled. But the movement took a different direction and it left you behind, and there are more of them than of you.
eta: They are re-defining what it means to be conservative. So you and folks like you are just going to need to find a new way to self-identify.
