Pain is not a thing that actually exists, merely signals created by our body to make sure we pay attention to something happening to it. If you learn to listen to those signals, you can control pain. It becomes optional.
I learned this when I was feeling a lot of pain because I had a couple of vertebrae being crushed. I learned to feel the vertebrae instead of the pain.
