Say what you will about referenda, but they do hedge against personality cults and tyranny of the minority.

The country supports abortion rights. In states where abortion has been restricted, a thin band of officious legislators thwart the wishes of a significant majority.

But that can't happen when referenda are passed blocking those legislators' ability to fiddle with abortion rights. As we saw happen in 6 states, many red ones, this cycle.
