I also saw About Schmidt this weekend and I reacted the same way you did. It is definitely the best work Nicholson's done in years. I'm not sure if he's gotten enthusiastic about acting again or if it's just the first role in a long time where he's had to play someone other than Jack Nicholson.
I also thought Dermott Mulroney's balding mullet was one of the better pieces of costuming to come along since Julie Newmar wriggled into the Catwoman costume.
