There is nothing wrong with suggesting a tux. You were kindly making up for the hosts' wishy-washy cloddishness.
That said, maybe Coltrane should go into full "Puttin' on the Ritz" mode, spats and all, and use the opportunity to beat the crap out of the host with his silver-handled, ivory-tipped cane.
