It's worse than you think. Even people who went there undergrad do not call it "Berkeley." They call it "Cal."* It's the people who did not go to Cal who tend to call it "Berkeley" or "Yoo See Berkeley."** Of course, I'm not in a position to complain. People who attended my undergraduate school have a pretentious nomenclature that essentially constitutes a secret code for "I am a self-satisfied asshole/I went to ______." As you know, I rely instead on tone to establish the same effect.
*According to this thinking, there is only one University of California. Thus, it is unnecessary to refer to it by its location. The rest are branch offices, which of course require place-names.
**Admittedly, this is subtle. It's only glaring to the natives, like a purported Southland native who doesn't use the definite article before a highway or route number. "The 405." "The 110."
