Quite true, though I (a mere outsider) and others I knew always referred to it as "Cal" growing up, since that's how the sports uniforms read -- most notably the football helmets. I do believe such reference by the general public is limited to the sports context, however.
Ironically, I had to look at the website the other day, as a sibling is applying to grad school there... I figured the mostly logical domain name would be "ucberkeley.edu" but go figure, it is merely "berkeley.edu"
