I have no idea what the BBC was or was not doing with Google, but you don't have to buy anything from Google to manipulate the results it gives. Because Google predicts your interest in a site from the number of other sites that link to it, Google bombing involves linking to a site. To see an example, type "miserable failure" into Google and hit "I'm feeling lucky."
