Have to disagree slightly with Steve Martin. Which Mamet movie was he in? I forget, but he did a great job in a role very different from his usual "Father of the Bride" persona.
As for actors who can stretch, Willem Defoe is pretty versatile. And Liam Neeson. Denzel Washington proved he could stretch in "Training Day." (I thought he was also good as a Not Completely Nice guy in "He Got Game.") Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett also can convincingly inhabit very different characters from flick to flick.
And Ashley Judd. Mmmmmmmmm, Ashley. Huh? What? No, I'm serious. That chick can act. Don't hate her because she's beautiful.Back to top

I actually disagree with this one. Maybe he chose to do too many Top Gun type movies, but I've never thought he was bad in a movie. He may be guilty of selling us his personality, but I don't think his personality gets in the way of the characters he chooses to play when he does branch out a bit. I didn't like Born on the Fourth of July that much, but it really was a different role. You can even argue that he did some acting in Vanilla Sky.
He's not going to make me forget that he's Tom Cruise, but I think he does well in the roles he chooses. I also think Brad Pitt is one of the most underrated actors. But I just like his style. He was great in Snatch (one of my top ten favorite movies -- if you judge them by how many times I can watch them over and over again).
Hmmmm, sounds like another poll.

Spanish Prisoner. Not to be rude, but I thought he sucked in it. He just looked like he was trying not to be funny the whole time. It was like he was trying not to fuck up his lines.

Has anyone mentioned Nicolas Cage? He's pretty versatile. (although that doesn't make me like him all the time (see, e.g. any action-hero movie he's been in) - although I liked Raising Arizona and Adaptation - and Fast Times at Ridgemont High).
Someone else who is versatile (although generally ranges from sucky to very very bad, does try a lot of different things) is John Travolta. Thinking about Vincent Vega always makes me giggle.
And Cameron Diaz tries to do different things - compare her sucky roles in Very Bad Things and My best friend's Wedding to her in Being John Malkovich. Not that it makes me like her much.Back to top

For some reason, I can't turn off "Interview with the Vampire," even though my hatred for that film is deep and abiding. I've previously said it contains the worst collective performance of any film in English. And yet I watch. Maybe it's the art direction. Yeah, that's it.

I recently had a discussion with a friend about the actual skill needed to act (in movies and tv). I think there are very few skilled, successful actors and what ends up happening is that the viewing public is essentially buying someone's personality. We like Julia Roberts, so we want to see a Julia Roberts type character in a bunch of movies. It's like packaging and selling the popular kids in high school.
I understand that there is type-casting and studios tend to hire actors for roles they've had success with in the past, but either way, I think my argument still stands.
Anyway, name five actors/actresses who take significantly different roles from either (1) other roles they've had or (2) their out-of-character personalities.
Here are my five:
1. Ed Norton
2. Johnny Depp
3. Jeffrey Wright
4. John Malkovich
5. Daniel Day Lewis
Or, better yet, who are the top five most guilty of playing the same damn role or playing up their personality quirks in each of their roles:
1. (hands down) Samuel L. Jackson
2. Julia Roberts
3. Meg Ryan
4. Michael Douglas
5. Sean Connery

Here's the set-up in a nutshell:
Eric Schaeffer, a New York City cab driver, and Donal Lardner Ward, his bartender friend and roommate, spontaneously decide to make a film.
They don't have a script -- or even the idea for a script ("I think this whole idea thing is overrated" says Eric about halfway throught the film.) They also know nothing about production, direction, or camerawork. They are nearly broke.
They wind up making a movie about themselves trying to make this movie. Martha Plimpton has an amazing raunchy cameo. Phoebe Cates also has a cute cameo.
Great scenes include Martha Plimton talking about taking a shit, Eric dancing around his apartment sing-songing "I have a girlfriend now" after receiveing a hang-up on his answering machine, and the line "We're not going to meet anyone. We're just going to die weird and dumb."
Rent this movie. If you hate it, send me a message and I'll refund your $2.99. Be sure to watch the outtakes under the final credits.

I like lots of serious movies, but I don't tend to watch them more than once, maybe twice. The ones that I can bear to watch again are generally um, not serious. These are the ones I truly cannot turn off.
Better Off Dead (Frawnch Fries, Frawnch Dressing...)
Princess Bride
Office Space

Wizard of Oz (remember when it would come on only once a year and it was a big event?)
Christmas Vacation

Movie thoughts while listening to GWB on NPR:
I disagree with he/she who put Phillip Seymour Hoffman on the "plays different roles" list. I've never seen him play anything but his nebbishy weirdo Boogie Nights/Happiness guy, with slight variations (by the way, his Happiness role is GENIUS).
One-scene movies:
Post-interupted because GWB just pushed all his chips into the center of the table.
Keep up the movie talk though. - My all time great dark-horse movie recommendation is John Woo's The Killer, but it doesn't have the same impact when not seen on the big screen. I can never turn off "Some Kind of Wonderful" when it comes on the TV either.Back to top
