There was an article/study released a couple of years ago that demonstrated that children of cousins were very unlikely to develope genetic defects. Study, IIRC, also said that they were still something like 7 times more likely than children of unrelated parents) to have birth defects, but that the odds were still sufficiently low that we shouldn't worry.
