Truth be told if he had come to me and said "what was I thinking, I'd like to renew my subscription, and that was a stupid thing for me to say" it would have been find. I probably would ahve milked him to take me out to dinner or something. It was the fact that he lied about it.

My mother has come into my place and seen a copy of Playboy on the coffee table. She was amazed they still printed it. Its not even considered scandalous any more - in any regard. Hell, the articles are tamer than Maxim and Vanity Fair. And there's more real nudity in the body painting section of the SI swimsuit edition.
As to the lying, whatever. You should have expected it. Your request was silly. I make promises I have no intention of keeping about stupid shit like this all the time, and my wife does the same. I lie about cleaning the cat litter every other day. And she perpetually lies about parking the truck in the security lot I pay for (I catch her lazily parking it on the street all the time). We let that shit slide.
You gotta lie about something, so its better to get it out of thew way on the small silly shit.
