Pre-Curt Flood, baseball players didn't make a whole lot, either. And he had retired by the time they got married (though I think that Joe eventually made $100,000 per). Though his Bowery Savings and other endorsement deals made him comfortable, I don't think that he was rich in the 1950s.
And call me nutty, but I'm guessing that Arthur Miller didn't bring home a lot of coin for "The Crucible," prize-winning play or not.
