So often, the sport jacket is worn by someone who can't quite commit to the appropriate attire. The coach can't quite deal with himself in a suit; the country club drone feels naked without a jacket of some sort. I think the occassions upon which a sport jacket is more appropriate than a suit (or simply going casual) are increasingly rare. The feet have been swept out from under the sport jacket: where people used to were one, it now looks stuffy.
In law school, I used to watch I Spy (you know, Bill Cosby) all the time (Howard University PBS). One of the most interesting parts was their dress. In one episode, they changed into sport coats to go to a carnival.
I have two sport jackets, and I'm lucky if each gets worn once a year. Suits are just so much easier to deal with. I must spend 30 minutes trying to pick out pants each time I wear them. OTOH, I'll probably end up wearing one this weekend. Better start thinking about the pants now.
