Surely your busy social life finds you in situations somewhere between "in court" and "at the beach." Do you wear a business suit when you go out to a nice (not formal) restaurant with your friends?
Sportscoats (and I'm not talking about the blue blazer with gold plastic buttons your mom bought for you before fraternity rush) are versatile and would enliven what sounds to me to be a wardrobe that screams, "I don't know what to wear, so put me in a suit and I oughtta be ok." Wearing either suits or board shorts is a copout. Anybody's wife can pick out a nice HF and we all have the surf shorts despite the best efforts of the fairer sex to rid us of them. Pick up a few sportcoats and start experimenting. They look great with neckerchiefs.
