Is this a Catholic thing where everyone has a soul starting at conception so you should treat it like a sibling? I am a confirmed Catholic but we didn't get to fetus handling.

Its actually a very popular form of art. I haven't explored the plaster-casting angle, but my wife and I have some lovely silkscreens. One room is a succession of the same screen in various dayglo colors. Its hot.
