Guilt, bay-bee, guilt. I also love the way the feds sat on her request for a lawyer. "Gosh, they must just be real busy."

In other news, Sunday's episode resolved a dispute between Mrs. NB and I about the Mystery that is Carmella. One of us thought that Carm was outraged by Tony's infidelity, and wanted out because she didn't love him any more. This person also thought that Carm wanted out because she didn't like what Tony did for a living -- sort of a realization that he was a bad person.

The other person thought that what really bothered Carmella was that she could no longer plausibly deny Tony's affairs when drunken Russian women began calling the house. And that she really didn't care about what he did so long as she had a nice car, nice house, and classy outfits. And that if she really wanted to leave Tony, there was no reason why she couldn't.

After the spec house arrangement, now the first person realizes what the deal is. Look for Father Phil to start visiting again.

Game, set, match.
I think Carmela is the best -- well, the most complex -- character on the show (although Diet Tony would probably win that dubious award had he been around each season). Of course she knew all along what the "deal" was; however she did not bargain for that part of the "deal" that was the "in your face" infidelity. I think part of that bargain was that his affairs were supposed to be discreet. She also wanted to be able to think of herself as an upright, religious person -- until the Jewish psychiatrist (a brilliant scene -- in my top 5 of the whole series) tells it to her straight, and doesn't let her justify it. She toys with the idea of making a new life on her own, but in the end opts for the comfortable, although shady and not something she's proud of, lifestyle.

Carmela (like all of us) wants her cake, and wants to eat it too. And (again, like all of us) she is unable to, so she just decides to have the cake (or eat it -- not sure how to carry out this metaphor).
