I used to carry my bar card around for two reasons.
1. I used to visit clients in prison, and the guards at San Quentin have this ever-so-polite way of asking for your bar card when you show up for a lawyer visit.
2. The State Bar offices used to be located near the SF Symphony, and you could park there at night if you displayed your bar card on the dashboard. This remains the only thing the State Bar has ever done for me.
I have occasionally checked an opposing lawyer's bar number, when I had a couple of clients who occasionally got sued by bottom-feeder lawyers. Never found a lawyer who had actually been disbarred (or who wasn't licensed), but did find someone with an interesting disciplinary history that was pretty helpful to my case.
