Well, here in Podunk, we litigators have to put our bar number on pleadings. I am certain that at least one opposing litigant has checked on me to make sure that I really am a lawyer.

Also, when you have a case in another jurisdiction, and want to appear pro hac vice, the other jurisdiction sometimes asks for your bar number and checks to make sure that you are really admitted.

And at the courthouse in Beaucoup Egypt, a bar card gets you past the long line at the metal detector. (For the record, I never do it because it makes me feel too guilty to jump in front of all the people who are trying to get to the cattle-call hearings in traffic court before the bailiff locks the door.)
